First day of Blue Room Innovation with the Packaging Cluster.

The Clúster de Packaging of Catalunya, an entity that brings together more than 100 members of the environment of packaging and packaging, has organized a day to visit the packaging recycling plant in Gavà.

The Blue Room Innovation team, which debuted as a member of the cluster with yesterday's visit, was able to share the experience with other members of this entity that seeks to improve the competitiveness of the ecosystem of the world of packaging through market intelligence, networking and different projects.

The day began with an introduction to the environmental classroom to contextualize the plant within the metropolitan waste management system and then a guided tour was made that allowed to know the whole process of packaging recycling from its entry into the plant to the exit.

Although packaging comes separately from other municipal waste, it is necessary to make a selection since the fraction of packaging includes a wide variety of materials that can only be recycled after being completely separated.

Discover more about the plant process

Gavà recycling plant focuses on the recycling of domestic packaging, which the citizen throws in the yellow container.

During the guided tour we were able to know in depth the process of treatment of the containers once they are received in the plant:

  • First, the containers are separated by volume. This process makes it possible to make a large-scale separation between waste that can later be recycled and the waste.
  • Then and thanks to an optical light, the waste is separated according to material: metals, bricks, and plastics of different types such as HDPE (high density polyethylene), LDPE (low density polyethylene), PET, etc.
  • Once the waste has been properly separated, the recyclable materials are pressed into bales to facilitate storage and transport to recycling companies.

Reject, rethink, reduce, reuse, repair, restore, remanufacture, redefine, recycle.

We have been able to observe that recycling is a very important process to contribute to the circular economy, but the challenge goes beyond this "R".

More sustainable packaging or that encourage the user to carry out more sustainable consumption are also very important to reduce our impact on the environment.
