Sustainable innovation for circular economy

Sustainable innovation resurfaces as an indispensable pillar for the circular economy.

A more sustainable economy would be possible thanks to the incorporation of the circularity concept, an economy where the value of products, materials and resources is maintained for as long as possible, thus reducing the generation of new waste to a minimum.

Changing the way we produce, treat and market our products and services is possible, but it takes time and resources to do so. Businesses must continue to exist while investing in innovation and transformation.

The states and the European Union are aware that they must promote the circular economy and help in this transformation towards sustainability. In Spain, for example, an Action Plan for the Circular Economy for 2021-2023 has recently been approved.

Circular Economy Plan

This Plan announced a few days ago emphasizes the production, consumption and management of waste and the need to continue innovating and researching to achieve an increasingly circular economy.

In the area of production, consumption and waste management, they include aimed at the inclusion of the circular economy in areas ranging from the food industry to the forestry sector, through the promotion of eco-design or the inclusion of qualifying requirements in the specifications and aid programs, loans and public lines of credit.

The Circular SME initiative is highlighted, to help integrate the circular economy in small and medium-sized companies and aid to design action plans for sustainable tourism is especially mentioned.

Related to consumption, several very interesting actions are presented such as the European Ecological Label and the development of an informative label on the useful life of the product and its repairability index.

In addition, 39 measures for waste management are included to adapt the circular economy criteria in the regulations and waste plans. For example, it includes analyzing the feasibility of establishing a Deposit, Refund and Return system for old mobile phones or electrical / electronic devices.

Innvation is the key, is the challenge

Is it possible to improve repairability overnight? How does the repairability of a product affect the accounts of the businesses that sell that product? Great changes are coming and to be able to face them successfully it is necessary to invest time in innovating, in changing things, in transforming business models to make them more sustainable.

Repairing a mobile phone or ensuring its return to take advantage of its components is just one example applied to one of the thousands of products that we use in our day to day life.
