What if recycling came with a reward? With RECICLOS, we’ve succeeded in rewarding the recycling of cans and beverage bottles using blockchain technology. Through an app, users scan the barcodes of containers and receive RECICLOS tokens as a reward for indicating that they’ve recycled. The app also includes a marketplace where users can redeem tokens for prize draw entries or donations to sustainable and environmental projects.
Packaging recycling objectives are increasingly ambitious, and to achieve them, it’s essential to continue promoting strategies that encourage recycling. In this context, Ecoembes (the non-profit entity in charge of packaging recycling in Spain) launched this challenge to digitize and reward recycling through an open innovation call.
Blue Room Innovation presented the first MVP of RECICLOS and developed the idea by implementing successful pilot tests in 4 municipalities. After observing improvements in recycling indicators, the project has continued to grow and now has more than half a million users committed to recycling and sustainability.
The Green Adventure
The Green Adventure is an interactive gamification experience in PortAventura that combines blockchain and sustainability to offer a fun and educational way to learn about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).. Visitors, especially younger ones, participate in an educational scavenger hunt, answering questions and completing challenges to accumulate points, win prizes, and progress in the experience. Blockchain technology ensures transparent and efficient prize distribution through smart contracts, guaranteeing that all participants receive their rewards fairly.
The project was developed in collaboration with PortAventura and Blue Circular Innovation, the spin-off of Blue Room Innovation specialized in technological solutions for sustainability. The initial phase of the project has been successful, and next steps include implementing new gamification dynamics and expanding the experience to broader audiences beyond youth.
The Green Adventure PortAventura was looking for a way to bring sustainability to its younger audience without compromising the entertainment experience for young visitors. The challenge was to make sustainability engaging and participatory, and one that could be easily combined with the entertainment of the attractions.
